Knight's Drivers Academy
Commercial driver's license educational school that provides training to ages 18 and up. We are approved through the DMV for the required state hours of 150.
Refresher Course or Second Chance Training
CDL Refresher Course Program Description: The CDL Refresher Course at Knight’s Drivers Academy is designed to provide comprehensive, skills-based training for individuals who currently hold, or previously held, a Commercial Driver’s License and require additional instruction to return to safe, compliant operation of commercial motor vehicles. This program ensures drivers meet current FMCSA standards, industry expectations, and employer requirements. Program Purpose: The purpose of the CDL Refresher Course is to evaluate and enhance a driver’s existing knowledge and skill level through structured training, updated safety practices, and competency-based assessments. The program is intended for drivers who have been out of the workforce, have limited recent driving experience, or need additional training prior to returning to duty. Program Objectives: Upon completion, participants will: Demonstrate proficiency in the safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle. Apply current FMCSA regulations, Hours-of-Service rules, and safety compliance requirements. Perform complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to industry standards. Execute essential backing maneuvers, shifting techniques, turns, lane control, space management, and couplings/uncoupling. Identify and correct unsafe driving habits through instructor-led evaluations. Course Structure: Training includes classroom instruction, range skills practice, and behind-the-wheel road time. Each student undergoes an initial assessment used to customize their training plan. 1. Classroom/Knowledge Review. FMCSA regulatory updates. Hours-of-Service (HOS) compliance. Logbook/Elog instruction. Safety protocols and defensive driving principles. Vehicle systems overview (braking, steering, transmission, and emergency procedures). Cargo securement basics and weight distribution fundamentals. 2. Range/Skills Training Complete pre-trip inspection procedures. Straight-line backing, offset backing, and alley docking. Coupling and uncoupling procedures. Vehicle control exercises (clutch control, shifting, and turns). 3. Behind-the-Wheel Road Training. Roadway operation in varying traffic conditions. Lane changes, merging, and space management. Hazard recognition and risk avoidance. Compliance with state and federal driving standards. Instructional Methods: Training is delivered through instructor-led demonstrations, guided practice, performance evaluations, and corrective coaching. The program uses a competency-based approach to ensure mastery of required skills prior to completion. Completion Requirements: To successfully complete the program, students must: Participate in all required instructional hours. Demonstrate safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle. Pass final skills evaluations conducted by certified instructors. Program Outcomes: Graduates will possess the updated knowledge, confidence, and skill level necessary to safely re-enter the commercial driving field. They will be fully prepared for employer road tests, company evaluations, or state-required retesting if needed.
